Set Up and Claim Your Cubicore Gateway

Connect your preconfigured Cubicore Gateway or claim it to your own The Things Network account.

Product status: Confirm the current product status and supported features in the applicable product documentation before deploying in production.

Claiming is optional

You do not need to claim the gateway to use it. If you only want to start using the gateway, follow the Wi-Fi setup instructions in Getting Started: Cubicore Gateway Series.

Overview

The Cubicore Gateway Hub and Cubicore Gateway Pocket are dual-channel LoRaWAN-compatible gateways containing two internal one-channel gateway devices. Each internal channel has its own Gateway EUI, so every physical gateway has two Gateway EUIs but only one claim code.

Cubicore Gateway Series devices are shipped preconfigured to work with The Things Network by default, using the recommended Philippine LoRaWAN settings.

After you provision both gateway channels to Wi-Fi, the gateway is ready to forward LoRaWAN packets. You normally do not need to configure the gateway manually in a LoRaWAN network server.

You still need a TTN account to create applications, register end devices, configure your LoRaWAN deployment, and view incoming data.

Claiming the gateway is optional. You can either continue using the preconfigured Cubicore gateway setup or claim the gateway so that your TTN account becomes an administrator collaborator.

The Things Network sign-up options and The Things ID account registration form

Create a The Things Network account — a TTN account is required whether or not you claim the gateway.

Create a TTN account

A The Things Network (TTN) account is required whether or not you claim the Cubicore gateway. You will use your account to create applications, register end devices, view gateway activity, and access incoming application data.

  1. Visit The Things Network.
  2. Select Sign up or Create account.
  3. Complete the account registration.
  4. Sign in to the TTN Console.
  5. Find the TTN User ID in the user profile.

A TTN account is still required

Claiming the gateway is optional, but you still need a TTN account to create and manage your LoRaWAN applications and end devices.

Onboarding options

There are two ways to use your Cubicore Gateway:

Option A: Use the preconfigured Cubicore setup

Choose this option if you want to start using the gateway without managing its gateway registration directly from your own TTN account.

The gateway is already configured to work with TTN by default. You only need to create your TTN application and end devices, provision both gateway channels to Wi-Fi, and configure your LoRaWAN end devices with compatible settings.

The gateway's registration in TTN is separate from your TTN applications and end devices. Your applications and end devices belong to your TTN account, while the gateway registration is managed by Cubicore.

The Things Stack Add menu showing Add application and Register end device in an application

In the TTN Console, use the Add menu to create an application and register an end device.

  1. Create or sign in to a TTN account.
  2. Create a TTN application and register the end device.
  3. Provision both internal gateway channels to Wi-Fi.
  4. Follow the existing Getting Started: Cubicore Gateway Series guide for Wi-Fi provisioning via BLE.
  5. Configure compatible LoRaWAN end-device settings.
  6. Check the end-device data in the TTN Console.

The recommended Philippine configuration is AS923 Group 3, 916.6 MHz / 916.8 MHz, SF10 / BW125, with ADR and dwell time disabled.

BLE is used only for Wi-Fi setup

The ESP BLE Provisioning app uses Bluetooth Low Energy to configure the gateway's Wi-Fi connection. After provisioning, the gateway uses Wi-Fi to connect to the network server. BLE is not the gateway's LoRaWAN backhaul.

Application data and network metadata

Your sensor or application payload is protected by LoRaWAN encryption. However, technical metadata such as gateway status, timestamps, radio statistics, and device identifiers may still be visible to the network infrastructure operator.

Option B: Claim the gateway to your TTN account

Choose this option if you want your own The Things Network account to manage the gateway.

Claiming adds your TTN account as an administrator collaborator for the gateway. Cubicore remains an administrator by default, but you may remove Cubicore's access later if you prefer to manage the gateway independently.

Claiming does not interrupt operation

Claiming is an account-access and administration step. It does not update the firmware, change the Wi-Fi settings, modify the LoRaWAN frequency settings, or interrupt packet forwarding.

Before you begin

Have the following information ready:

The Things Stack edit profile page showing where the TTN User ID is located

You can find your TTN User ID in the Profile settings page of the TTN Console.

Requirement Details
Email address Where Cubicore can contact you about the claim
TTN User ID Your The Things Network User ID, exactly as it appears in your TTN profile
Gateway claim code The 16-character claim code printed on the device label

The claim code is printed on the serial label underneath the gateway. The same label also contains the device serial number and both Gateway EUIs.

Gateway Pocket serial label showing both Gateway EUIs, the serial number, and the QR claim code

The serial label shows both Gateway EUIs, the serial number, and the QR claim code.

Gateway EUIs are for verification

You do not need to type the Gateway EUIs into the claim form. Each claim code is already associated with both Gateway EUIs. You may compare the EUIs on the label with the EUIs shown in TTN after claiming to verify that the correct gateway was onboarded.

The gateway does not need to be online

The claim request is processed through the claim portal. The physical gateway does not need to be powered on or connected to Wi-Fi while you submit the claim.

Claiming procedure

Step 1: Open the claim portal

Open the Cubicore Gateway Claim Portal in a web browser:

gateway.cubicore.cloud

The Cubicore Gateway Claim Portal page with Email address, TTN User ID, and Claim code fields

The Cubicore Gateway Claim Portal collects your email, TTN User ID, and the gateway claim code.

The portal is used to associate your TTN User ID with the two Gateway EUIs assigned to the physical gateway.

Step 2: Enter your email address

Enter an email address where Cubicore can contact you about the claim request.

Email verification

Email verification is not required to complete the claim process.

Step 3: Enter your TTN User ID

Enter your The Things Network User ID exactly as it appears in your TTN profile.

Use your TTN User ID

Enter your TTN User ID, not your email address, TTN password, gateway serial number, or Gateway EUI.

You can find your TTN User ID in your TTN profile.

Step 4: Enter or scan the claim code

Enter the 16-character claim code printed on the gateway label. You can type the code manually or select Scan code to scan the QR code on the label.

One claim code is associated with both Gateway EUIs inside the physical gateway. You do not need to submit two separate claims.

Gateway Pocket serial label with the 16-character claim code and QR code

The claim code and QR code are printed on the device label. Keep the label secure.

Keep your claim code secure

Your claim code is a private onboarding credential. Do not share it publicly, post a photo of the device label online, or send it to an unauthorized person.

Anyone with access to the claim code may be able to submit a claim request for the gateway. Keep the original label secure and email support@cubicore.io if the code has been exposed, lost, or appears to have been used.

  • Enter the code exactly as printed.
  • Do not add spaces.
  • Be careful with similar characters such as 0 and O, or 1 and I.
  • The claim code is normally intended for one-time use.

Step 5: Submit the registration

Select Submit registration.

The portal validates the claim code and associates your TTN User ID with both Gateway EUIs assigned to the gateway.

One code claims both gateway channels

A Cubicore Gateway contains two one-channel gateway devices and therefore has two Gateway EUIs. One claim code is used to onboard both EUIs.

Step 6: Wait for completion

The claim normally completes within 1–2 minutes. The gateway does not need to be powered on while the claim is being processed.

After waiting, continue to Verify the gateway in TTN.

Processing time

Most claims complete within 1–2 minutes. If the gateway does not appear after several minutes, refresh the TTN Console and follow the troubleshooting steps below.

What claiming changes

After a successful claim, your TTN account is added as an administrator collaborator for the gateway. Cubicore remains an administrator by default.

The gateway continues operating normally. Claiming does not modify the gateway hardware, firmware, Wi-Fi configuration, LoRaWAN channel settings, or packet-forwarding behavior.

  • Your TTN account can manage the gateway.
  • Both Gateway EUIs are associated with the claimed gateway.
  • Cubicore remains an administrator by default.
  • You may remove Cubicore's access from your TTN account.
  • You may delete the gateway and configure it independently if desired.
  • No additional physical setup is required after claiming.
  • The gateway continues operating while the claim is processed.

Cubicore access remains by default

Cubicore remains an administrator collaborator after a successful claim so that support can continue when needed. You may remove Cubicore's access if you prefer to manage the gateway independently.

Verify the gateway in TTN

The Things Stack Gateway status page showing a green online indicator and connection stats

Confirm the gateway is connected and online in the TTN Console.

  1. Sign in to your The Things Network account.
  2. Open the TTN Console.
  3. Select the appropriate TTN region or cluster, if requested.
  4. Open the gateway list.
  5. Find the claimed Cubicore gateway.
  6. Confirm that both Gateway EUIs are present.
  7. Confirm that your TTN User ID is listed as an administrator collaborator.
  8. Confirm that Cubicore remains listed as an administrator, unless you have removed Cubicore's access.
  9. Check the gateway connection or activity status.
  10. Test the gateway with a compatible LoRaWAN end device.

To verify that the gateway is receiving LoRaWAN traffic, use a properly configured end device. The gateway must have Wi-Fi internet access, and the end device must use compatible Philippine LoRaWAN settings.

Use the EUIs as a sanity check

The Gateway EUIs are not required during claim form submission. They are useful after claiming to confirm that the two gateway channels shown in TTN match the two EUIs printed on the device label.

To exchange packets successfully, the end device must use LoRaWAN settings compatible with the gateway and the Philippine deployment requirements.
