LoRa Point-to-Point (P2P) on the Cubicore Devboard
Applicable models
Applicable to the Cubicore Devboard (ESP32-S3 + SX1262 on RAK3112 module).
Product status
Confirm the current hardware revision, pinout allocations, and supported firmware features in the Cubicore Devboard product documentation before deploying in field production.
This guide demonstrates how to establish direct point-to-point (P2P) RF communication between two Cubicore Devboards using raw Semtech SX1262 LoRa modulation without needing a LoRaWAN gateway or network server.
1. Prerequisites & Hardware Setup
- Two Cubicore Devboards mounted in their baseplates, each equipped with an external 915 MHz blade antenna threaded onto the baseplate's RP-SMA bulkhead jack.
- Two USB-C data cables connected to your workstation or power supplies.
- Arduino IDE with
RadioLibinstalled.
2. P2P Radio Configuration Parameters
For two LoRa devices to communicate directly, their RF parameters must match identically:
- Carrier Frequency:
915.0 MHz(or regional ISM band equivalent:868.0 MHz,923.0 MHz) - Bandwidth (BW):
125.0 kHz(or250.0 kHz,500.0 kHz) - Spreading Factor (SF):
SF7toSF12 - Coding Rate (CR):
4/5 - Sync Word: Private network sync word (
0x12or0x1424) - Output Power:
+22 dBm(maximum for SX1262)
Next Steps
- Power and Battery Optimization — Optimize radio airtime and utilize ESP32-S3 deep sleep to maximize battery life.
- Joining a LoRaWAN Network — Transition from point-to-point links to long-range managed LoRaWAN gateways.
